Rejected Ideas

The jukebox didn't spring fully-formed from my imagination. Along the way there were many ideas considered and rejected, designs implemented and abandoned, promising avenues that turned out to be dead ends. This page lists some of the ideas and products that didn't find their way into our jukebox, but might suit your purposes.

  • The PC jukebox products listed on the Home Page (but see page Jukebox Lite)
  • Using J River Media Center as the server with MusicLobby PPC or NetRemote or similar products as the remote control
  • Using a browser plug-in for Winamp, such as Webamp, WAWI, or BrowseAmp (see also page Jukebox Lite)
  • Using MusicMatch as a server or as a database
  • Using FLAC encoding rather than WMA lossless
  • Using a standard PDA (with a 4" screen) as a remote control
  • Using a Nokia 770 Internet tablet (with a 4" screen) as a remote control
  • Using a laptop PC as a remote control
  • Using a tablet PC as a remote control
  • Using an old laptop for the jukebox server
  • Using any low-powered PC for the jukebox server
  • Using WiFi wherever it was at all possible to have a wired link
  • Streaming audio over the network (wired or wireless)
  • Genres any more specific than "Popular" and "Classical"
  • Sorting popular artists by last name, e.g. "Frank Sinatra" under "S". Records shops do it, but it makes no sense.
